Alexander, here in Germany there is an old custom, namely to light a “potato fire” after the potato harvest.
A fire is made from the dry herb of the harvested potatoes and wood and then the potatoes are thrown into it. The scent is fantastic. You sit around the fire and wait until you can get the potatoes out of the fire and eat them. They taste incomparable.

I remember that kind of fun from my childhood. Unfortunately, here in Canada nobody doing that, even farmers. The other scent of Autumn for me is the smoke of dry burning leaves.
I am going to move out of city for living very soon and probably can make that kind of potatoes. 🙂

Alexander, here is another tip from Germany: wrap coarse, unsmoked sausages like candy in sandwich paper (note: no aluminum foil!) And place in the charcoal with the potatoes – side by side, not on top of each other! Cover everything with about two inches of hot embers. In this way they are braised in their own juice, they look pale, but the taste is a real stunner !!

Thank you. It is impossible to read your food tips when hungry. I’ve not been to Germany for a long time. Last my visit was in 2012. I missed a lot your lovely country. Say hello to Germany for me. 🙂❤️

I love the smell of burning leaves. In my childhood by the autumn time people raked leaves and burnt them. The smell was awesome!
